چکیده

This position paper discusses the evolution of multi-module neural net systems, where the number of neural net modules is up to ten million (i.e. an "artificial brain"). ATR's "CAM-Brain" Project [de Garis 1993, 1996] has progressed to the point where it is technically possible (using a new FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) based evolvable hardware (EHW or E-Hard) system to be completed by the spring of 1998 [Korkin & de Garis 1997]) to begin to evolve and build an artificial brain containing 10,000 neural net modules. This development raises the prospect that within a few years these numbers will rapidly increase. This paper introduces some issues that such massive systembuilding will generate. The immediate question is "What should we evolve?" This paper presents some suggested evolvable system targets containing N neural net modules, where N = 100; 1000; 10,000; 100,000; 1,000,000; 10,000,000 with an emphasis on the N = 100 case, for purposes of illustration. The issues involved are not only of a conceptual and evolutionary engineering nature, but (when N is large) economic, managerial and even political as well.

CoDi-1Bit: A Simplified Cellular Automata Based Neuron Model

This paper presents some simpliications to our recently introduced \CoDi-model", which we use to evolve Cellular Automata based neural network modules for ATR's artiicial brain project \CAM-Brain" 11]. The great advantage of CAs as a modeling medium, is their paral-lelism, which permits neural system simulation hardware based on CoDi to be scaled up without loss of speed. Simulation speed is cr...

CAM-Brain: A New Model for ATR's Cellular Automata Based Artificial Brain Project

This paper introduces a new model for ATR's CAM-Brain Project, which is far more eecient and simpler than the older model. The CAM-Brain Project aims at building a billion neuron artiicial brain using \evolutionary engineering" technologies. Our neural structures are based on Cellular Automata (CA) and grow/evolve in special hardware such as MIT's \CAM-8" machine. With the CAM-8 and the new CAM...

"CBM (CAM-BRAIN MACHINE)" A Hardware Tool which Evolves a Neural Net Module in a Fraction of a Second and Runs a Million Neuron Artificial Brain in Real Time

This paper describes a hardware architecture capable of evolving thousands of neural network modules in a matter of minutes and running a simulation of a million neuron modular artificial brain in real time. This new hardware system (called a "CBM", i.e. a CAM-Brain Machine) is an essential component in ATR's ongoing "CAMBrain Project", which aims to build/grow/evolve an artificial brain consis...

Cam - Brain

This paper reports on the second year of an ambitious 8 year research project which aims to implement a cellular automata based artificial brain with a billion neurons by 2001, which grows/evolves at (nano-)electronic speeds inside a Cellular Automata Machine ATR's so-called "CAM-Brain Project". The basic idea is to use cellular automata based neural networks which grow under evolutionary contr...

The CAM-Brain Machine (CBM): Real Time Evolution and Update of a 75 Million Neuron FPGA-Based Artificial Brain

This article introduces ATR's \CAM-Brain Machine" (CBM), an FPGA based piece of hardware which implements a genetic algorithm (GA) to evolve a cellular automata (CA) based neural network circuit module, of approximately 1,000 neurons, in about a second, i.e. a complete run of a GA, with 10,000s of circuit growths and performance evaluations. Up to 65,000 of these modules, each of which is evolv...
